Elevate Your G.A.M.E. (EYG) is a non-profit 501(c)(3) organization dedicated to “lifting urban students to a higher level” in their Grades, Attendance, and Maturity to Empower them to be leaders. EYG was founded in 2002 by Michael Freeman (executive director of EYG) and Gipson Lyles (principal, Compton Unified School District). Currently, EYG mentors 300 underserved urban youth through its mentoring programs at six locations: Compton High School, Walton Middle School and Centennial High School in Compton; Cabrillo High School and the Northpointe Apartments in Long Beach; and Harbor Teacher Preparatory Academy in the Los Angeles Unified School District. Since its inception, EYG has also developed a Summer Internship Project, which provides on-the-job mentoring for the program’s high school teens during the summer. Topics discussed in mentoring sessions include: educational achievement, time management, work ethics, professionalism, financial management, nutrition and physical fitness. The mentors also monitor the students’ progress in their schoolwork and encourage them to improve. In addition, mentors help students to develop career goals. Occasional guest speakers address some of the above topics or expose the students to their professions. Through service projects the students are given opportunities to develop servant-leadership qualities by serving others through various service projects. Service projects have included the following: wrapping toys for needy children, feeding the homeless at a shelter, providing ushering at special school events, collecting books for children, reading to children and visiting children/teens at the neighborhood hospital. Businesses and government agencies partner with Elevate Your G.A.M.E. to provide summer internship experiences for the mentees to expose them to various careers. In addition, this provides them opportunities in the “real world” to put into practice what they learn in the mentoring sessions. The program has proven effective and life changing for many urban youth, such as for 16 year-old Myeon who says, "Elevate Your G.A.M.E. is a good learning experience for youth because we talk about different topics and it helps you in everyday life. I love going to Elevate Your G.A.M.E., because I know I am going to learn something new and I always do. I learned so many good qualities from my mentors through the past years. All of the mentors brought positive changes in my life. They taught me how to be more responsible in school. They taught me to turn my homework in on time and they help me make good choices. This is why I love my mentors and Elevate Your G.A.M.E." Through the efforts of its volunteer mentors, 95% of its students graduate from high school and most continue their education at the college and vocational school levels. EYG students have been accepted to Cal State Universities, University of California programs and to Occidental, Tuskegee, Dillard, Southern, and Williams College, among others.
